Final Fantasy Music

The first nine numbered games of the series were composed by Nobuo Uematsu exclusively.
The music of Final Fantasy IX was based around a theme of medieval music, and was heavily
inspired by previous Final Fantasy games, incorporating themes and motifs from earlier
soundtracks. Final Fantasy X was composed by Uematsu along with Masashi Hamauzu and
Junya Nakano. Final Fantasy X-2 was composed by Noriko Matsueda and Takahito Eguchi.
Uematsu, Naoshi Mizuta and Kumi Tanioka composed Final Fantasy XI. The expansion packs
were scored by Mizuta alone after Tanioka left to pursue other projects and Uematsu
left Square Enix. The opening of the game features choral music with lyrics in Esperanto.
Final Fantasy XII is mainly composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto, with 6 compositions being
contributed by his fellow Ogre Battle composers Hayato Matsuo and Masaharu Iwata.
Violinist Taro Hakase also contributed a piece named Symphonic Poem "Hope" featured
during the game's ending credits. The music is similar in styling and sound to Sakimoto's
previous Ivalice based projects, Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story.
Final Fantasy XIII, still in production, is being composed by Masashi Hamauzu, though its
main theme song will be composed by Nobuo Uematsu. Final Fantasy Versus XIII will feature
music by Yoko Shimomura, who composed the music for Kingdom Hearts and its sequels and also
worked with Uematsu and Koji Kondo in making the score for Super Mario RPG. The main theme
appearing on the trailers of Final Fantasy Versus XIII is titled Somnus.
Starting with Final Fantasy VII, the series has featured vocal songs as part of its scores.
Final Fantasy VII featured "One-Winged Angel", a Latin choral track played in the game's final
battle, with lyrics taken from the medieval poetry featured in Carl Orff's Carmina Burana.
Final Fantasy VIII featured "Liberi Fatali," a Latin choral piece that is played during the
introduction to the game, and "Eyes on Me," a pop song serving as the game's theme, performed
by Chinese singer Faye Wong. Final Fantasy IX's theme song "Melodies of Life" was performed by
Emiko Shiratori in both Japanese and English version. "Suteki da ne", the theme song of Final
Fantasy X, was performed by Japanese folk singer RIKKI in Japanese. Kumi Koda wrote and sung
real Emotion/1000 no Kotoba, the theme song of Final Fantasy X-2. Uematsu contributed the
theme song of Final Fantasy XII, Kiss Me Good-Bye, featured during the game's epilogue.
